Rubio’s® Partners with California Coastal Commission to Remove Trash from Coastline at 32nd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day

Coastal Grill Chain Invites Public to Attend California’s Largest Volunteer Event on September 17

SAN DIEGO, CA – Rubio’s® Restaurants is teaming up with the California Coastal Commission to sponsor the 32nd Annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 17 from 9 a.m. to noon. The statewide beach cleanup is expected to draw tens of thousands of volunteers to help remove cigarette butts, plastic bags, food wrappers and other types of plastic pollutants at more than 850 locations throughout California.

As the state’s largest volunteer event, California Coastal Cleanup Day brings community members together in support of coastal awareness and conservancy. Californians have continued to show their willingness to do their part by coming to the cleanups each year. In 2015, more than 68,300 volunteers turned out for the event, ridding California of more than 1.1 million pounds of trash. Over the 31-year history of the cleanup, almost 1.4 million volunteers have removed over 22 million pounds of trash from our coastlines to date.

“With 80% of trash found in the ocean linked to land-based sources like litter, industrial discharges and garbage management, it’s imperative our communities and local businesses work together to find solutions to marine pollution,” said Steve Kinsey, chair of the California Coastal Commission. “We are grateful to partner with companies like Rubio’s each year that help educate Californians about the need for healthy marine ecosystems.”

In addition to its sponsorship, Rubio’s Team Members will be attending select cleanups throughout San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County and Northern California offering attendees the chance to spin the Rubio’s prize wheel to win free meals and branded goodies. To thank hard-working volunteers for their support, Rubio’s will also provide attendees with vouchers for free tacos and complimentary kids meals at cleanup locations.

“The ocean has been an important part of our heritage since we first started Rubio’s in San Diego more than 30 years ago. Much of our menu includes seafood, so we are passionate about helping educate the public about the importance of maintaining healthy marine ecosystems,” said Ralph Rubio, co-founder of Rubio’s. “Sponsoring the 32nd Annual California Coastal Cleanup is a way for us to give back to our communities while raising awareness for clean water and healthy marine life.”

Rubio’s works to be a friend to the ocean year-round with a majority of its seafood being sourced from sustainable fisheries, recycling plastic and glass bottles in restaurants whenever possible, using eco-friendly plates and to-go containers and supporting ocean focused causes. These efforts help reduce the amounts of trash that can end up on beaches and the coastline. The company also supports several ocean-focused causes throughout the year, including coastal cleanups, river cleanups, Rubio’s annual CoastFest event, and being a member of the Blue Business Council.
